"My Talents" journal
page (PDF)
-
Have the YW give suggestions of talents they
would like to develop. Write down the suggestions, and plan an activity
to teach the girls two or more of those talents. For example:
-
Have a voice teacher come in and give pointers
on posture, using the diaphragm, etc.
-
Have a sewing lesson! Bring in machines
and teach the YW how to thread a machine, what the different parts are,
and make a project. We have made quilts for babies (humanitarian
project for RS), and sewn teddy bears for the city police department to
give to kids that are taken out of abusive situations, or have had another
traumatic experience. (Check with the departments in your area, and
see what the guidelines are for making bears.)
-
Have a lesson on using a word processor or graphics
program. See if someone can bring in laptops for this activity.
-
Teach the YW to crochet, and make bandages for
the Church's humanitarian center.
-
Have a stylist and beautician come in to talk
about "up-do's" and makeup.
-
Have a class on making simple meals.
-
Campbell's
has a great web site with easy recipes!
-
Have a lesson on painting, you can choose what
kind! (Oil, toll, water or walls.)
-
Powder puff car care. Let the girls learn
how to change a tire, replace a spark plug, check fluids, replace bulbs,
car safety tips.

Church Hymn
MIDI files. Play and learn the words as well as how to direct the music.
-
Music direction activity - Have the YW bring
in some of their favorite music. You can also see a listing of my
former Stake's dance play list with approved
songs and bring the music in yourself. As you play the music, help
the girls feel the beat, and teach them how to distinguish between 2/2,
2/4, 4/4 and 6/4. Teach them where the downbeat comes in, etc.
You can practice for a while, learning the different ways to lead, and
then play a game like "name that beat". Play songs (like big band,
waltzes, etc.) that the girls wouldn't readily know, and see who can figure
out the time. You could also have a practice using hymns that you
use regularly in your opening exercises. That way, nobody has an
excuse when they are asked to lead! ;o)

Have a lesson on how to give a devotional or
a talk. We did this at our YCL Training one year, and it was great!
They even had handouts with all of the information you would need to give
a devotional in 5 minutes. It was great! After the lesson, the girls
were split into groups of two and given a standard from "For the Strength
of Youth" to put a short devotional together. They could use their
scriptures, a hymnal, the FTSOY book, and a story that was given to them.

Have a career night, but instead of having a
professional come in, ask a few of the girls (who want to pass this goal
off) to research the career they want to have, and be ready to explain
it to the other YW. Then, ask the girls how these careers are not
only jobs, but ways to serve. They can give a list of different acts
of service their professions and others can perform. Perhaps you
could fill plastic fire helmets with cookies to take to your local firehouse,
or write a big "Thank You" poster for someone who has served you through
their career (police, mayor, grocery store, teacher, farmer, nurse, doctor,
etc.).

-
Have a memorization night, where the girls memorize
the 13th Article of Faith.
-
Go to a High School play or other performance
(many cities offer free concerts in the summer), art museum, historical
museum, botanical walk (or nature hike), etc. If there is time, go
through the 13th Article of Faith point by point discussing how what you
as a group have experienced goes along with it.

Volunteer as a class to do a Primary Sharing
Time. Use it as an opportunity to read stories or act out a scripture
story for the kids.
-
Here is a list of sites dedicated to storytelling.
Use ideas and tips from these sites to put your own Storytelling workshop
together.
-
Read books
onto tape for Elementary schools or women's shelters.

-
Put together a Home Organization activity.
Have mothers and other RS members come in and do a panel discussion on
caring for a home. They can also bring in examples of things they
do to keep their homes organized.
-
DIY night - Learn how to do basic upkeep on
a house. How do you fix a hole in the wall? How do you replace
a broken flap on a toilet? What do you do when a pipe breaks?
How do you turn off the water and power in a house? How do you paint
a wall? What is a plumber's snake, and how do you use it? What
do you do if the garbage disposal stops?

-
Learn how to prepare a healthful meal for breakfast,
lunch and dinner. Write the recipes down and teach a class on how
to cook them. Invite a dietitian to meet with your class and talk
about nutrition.
-
Start a group that meets regularly to walk,
jog, swim, etc. It doesn't take a lot of money to get fit and to
exercise! Some parks have trails with places to do certain exercises
as you walk (and they have a plaque describing the different exercises).
You can also bike some trails. See what's available in your area.
-
Train for and participate in a 5k walk or run.
Check your city municipal building for information on different charity
walks and runs. You could also train for a 10k bike race, or even
a swimming competition or to make a team at your school.
-
Learn a new sport and practice it often. Soccer,
volleyball, tennis, badminton, football, softball, basketball, etc.

-
Invite the RS to display items they have created,
and ask them to teach small classes so the other YW can learn these skills.
-
Put on a "Talent Show", but make it a sort of
display of handiwork (painting, sewing, drawing, cake decorating, quilting,
toll painting, woodworking, etc.).
-
Learn how to decorate cakes (you can take classes
through a local craft store or continuing education classes through your
county or state) and enter one in the county fair competition.
