- Are You Being Served? - Set up a
room like a restaurant or a store, and dress like you are a waiter, mait'rde,
or sales person. Ask the YW if they are being served. Of course,
you will get puzzled looks, then have them sit down or browse through any
"merchandise" you have in your place of business. Merchandise in a
storefront should reflect different acts of service we may not notice, or
take for granted. If you are going with the restaurant theme, have
different items listed on the menu like "Your mom washed your clothes today.......$5.00"
or "Your teacher helped you with your paper.....$8.00", etc. Ask the
girls what services they would like, whether it be from the menu or on the
shelves. You can then talk about the little acts of service we don't necessarily
see, but benefit from. Unlike the menu or the merchandise, these acts
cannot be bought, but are done out of love. You might even be able
to make a Mastercard commercial out of it... "Washer and Dryer set: $500.
Detergent: $6.00. Dryer sheets: $3.00. A mom that does the wash
because she loves you: priceless." Ask the girls to add to the list
of things on the menu or on the tables, and challenge them to ask themselves
daily, "Am I being served?" You can give the YW a reminder like a mini
menu on a keychain (shrink down the original menu, print on cardstock and
laminate. Use keyrings from the craft store, and punch a small hole
in the corner of the mini-menu to put the rings through. Before laminating,
you can add a label or another piece of cardstock that has "Are you being
served?" on it.) or get play money (plastic quarters would work best) and
make keyrings out of those with a card secured between the two parts of the
ring that says, "Are you being served?". Another would be to make a
simple credit-card looking handout. On one side, print, "Small acts
of service... Priceless."

- Work with your parents to figure out the
family's favorite meals, and how to prepare them. Volunteer to help
with the cooking and cleanup for 2 weeks, writing down recipes as you go.
Ask your parent what shopping tips they have for getting groceries for the
family, and put a list together.

- Bring different types of comforters to class.
These can include a bed comforter, a pacifier, a teddy bear, a picture of
a parent holding a child, etc. Ask the YW what these things have in
common. (They are comforting) Wrap the bed comforter around one of
the YW and ask how it makes her feel. (Warm, cuddly, etc.) These
are the same feelings that we get when we help to comfort other people.
Go over the different situations and ways that we can offer comfort to others.
List them on the board, and hand out 3 cards to each girl. On the cards,
have the YW write three different ways they will try to help comfort others,
and a specific person's name if they want.

- Hand out a copy of "50 Ways to Serve Your Brother" (yes, it is a play
on the Paul Simon song...) and a blank calendar page. Have the YW fill
in their calendar with different ideas they get from the list. They
don't need a different idea for each day, as some service may take a week
or two to complete. You can also use this list for a service scavenger
hunt at another activity. If you want, have stickers to place in the calendar
boxes of the girls that bring them to class each week, with the week's service
completed. You can also give them the opportunity to talk about how
that week's service affected them and the people they served.

- Make a recipe book. Collect recipes
from members of the ward and/or the community. Sell the book to cover
costs, and donate the rest to the missionary fund, food bank, or Bishop's
storehouse.
- Bring a bunch of
cookbooks and recipe cards for the YW. Have the girls look through
the books and copy down the recipes they want to try. Have a short
lesson on nutrition and cooking instructions. Bring samples to try
for refreshments.
